Global Portfolio aims for 35 terminals by 2020 across 5 continents handling 18 million TEUs annually, becoming a Top Six Global Container Terminal Operator

Doha– December 15th, 2013: Gulftainer, one of the world’s largest privately owned port management and logistics companies based in Sharjah in the UAE, unveiled today a new vision and identity as one of the most competitive and recognizable terminal operators in the World.

At the launch event, held at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, and H.E. Sheikh Khaled Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ports Authority, the company also revealed a new brand identity, which reflects its expanding footprint into new international markets and a design that focuses on a spirit of partnership, strength, and reliability, three of Gulftainer’s core business pillars.
“From our humble roots nearly 40 years ago in Sharjah, we learnt that strong business values and operational efficiency were what the industry thrived on, and following this ethos we have successfully been able to export our expertise and professionalism from the UAE to numerous global key operational hubs since,” said Badr Jafar, CEO of Gulftainer’s parent company Crescent Enterprises and Vice-Chairman of Gulftainer.

“Our successes both at home and internationally have been achieved through the vision of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, who’s leadership enabled Sharjah to pioneer the ports industry in the whole of the Gulf with the first ever container terminal in the Arab World in 1972, and with the Emirate becoming one of the leading logistics hubs in the whole region ever since.” Badr Jafar added.
Having recently become the largest terminal operator in the Middle East in terms of the number of terminals operated, as a result of its majority acquisition of Gulf Stevedoring Contracting Company in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which saw it take full management of the ports of the terminals of North Container Terminal Jeddah, Jubail Container Terminal and Jubail Industrial Port, Gulftainer senior management pointed out that its success of recent years has been a collaborative effort.

“The name ‘Gulftainer’ is already seen as a credible and reliable partner, and we wish to expand this partnership with our customers to new ports and terminals around the world,” said Gulftainer’s Managing Director, Peter Richards.

Gulftainer has seen consistent growth over the past decade, averaging more than 12 per cent compared to global market growth of 8.6 per cent in the same period. In 2012, Gulftainer’s terminal at Khorfakkan was the fastest growing transhipment hub in the world with 28% growth. This year, Gulftainer expects to surpass 6 million TEUs and current projections anticipate up to 18 million TEUs by 2020, handling more than 10,000 vessel calls each year.

Today, the company’s portfolio covers four UAE operations in Khorfakkan, Sharjah, Hamriyah and Ruwais, as well as activities in Iraq at Umm Qasr, Recife in Brazil, Tripoli Port in Lebanon, and its recent acquisition in Saudi Arabia, managing container terminals in Jeddah and Jubail.

Gulftainer has a vibrant and comprehensive portfolio of new terminal projects spread across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, North and South America. With further global partnerships in the pipeline, Gulftainer estimates its global footprint will target 35 terminals and a place in the top six Global Container Terminal Operators.

“We have grown close to our customers over recent decades and they have developed a trust in our performance as the most productive port operator in the world; our growth in the future will rely on their support and continued partnership as we work to retain and prove our capabilities on a wider stage,” Mr Richards added.

“Our new identity is a logical step that communicates to both current and potential customers that we will continue to provide products and services that consistently outpace our competitors. The future looks extremely exciting for Gulftainer, and we look forward to maintaining the Gulftainer track record established over the past 37 years of delivering best in class service and record breaking productivity.”

Metro will offer time-saving eco-friendly transport

The Qatar Rail Development Programme will offer time-saving and environment-friendly transportation solutions, Qatar Rail Company (Qatar Rail) CEO Saad Ahmed al-Muhannadi has said.

For instance, the time taken to travel from Msheireb to Al Rayyan Stadium will be 23.5 minutes by the Metro as compared to around 39 minutes by car, he explained. Also, the Metro will help save around 2.8kg of carbon dioxide emission (for the same distance) – enough energy to light a lamp for 850 hours.

Commuting from Msheireb to Qatar University takes 28 minutes by car. By the Metro, it will take 18 minutes and also help save 1.9kg of carbon dioxide, enough to operate a television set for 200 hours in eight days. Similarly, a trip from Msheireb to Education City takes 28 minutes by car and causes the emission of 1.8kg of carbon dioxide. The same distance can be covered in 16 minutes by the Metro, it was pointed out.

Besides boosting transportation, the Qatar Rail network can generate over $38bn in potential revenue, according to forecasts. The projects are expected to generate revenue through three main modes: ticket sales, which will be sold at reasonable rates; rent and investment in real estate for retail outlets; and advertising, thereby creating a variety of jobs for the Qatari private sector.

“Whether through construction, design or other complementary and accompanying works, Qatar Rail has provided the private sector with a great deal of business and labour opportunities through its developments,” said Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Turki al-Subaie, managing director of Qatar Rail.

Hamad Ibrahim al-Bishri, Qatar Rail deputy CEO and chief programme officer, said the Doha Metro network would consist of four lines extending to 354km across the Greater Doha area, connecting the city’s two central points with larger commercial, residential and dynamic areas in Downtown Doha, operating underground in busy areas as well as on and above the ground level in the suburbs.

The network has more than 90 stations, two of which will be central and located in the city at Msheireb and Education City.

The Metro network will comprise the Red Line (Coastal Line), which will cover Wakrah city, Doha International Airport, Msheireb, Katara, The Pearl-Qatar and Qatar University routes; Gold Line (History Line), which will connect the airport’s northern part with Souq Waqif, Msheireb, Bin Mahmoud, Al Sadd and Al Waab; Green Line (Education Line), which will connect Education City - the centre of Qatar’s educational projects and achievements – with Msheireb and Hamad hospital; and Blue Line (City Line), a semi-circular line that will connect residential and commercial areas in the West Bay and the northern part of Airport City with the main C-Ring Road.

Additionally, the network will connect the Red, Gold, Green and Blue lines with each other, which will be implemented in two phases.

The Doha Metro project will cater to the requirements of the growing population of Qatar and the Red Line - South will link Doha to Msheireb, which will be a central station and the intersection point for different Metro lines. It will also operate underground in the centre of the city.

The Red Line will link Downtown Doha to the business hub in West Bay, going underground to reach the new Lusail city, while its southern extension will connect Doha to the centre of Msheireb.

The Gold Line will connect Hamad International Airport with Qatar’s new national museum, Msheireb central station and the heart of Doha. Meanwhile, the Green Line will transport passengers to football stadiums that will be built in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Doha Metro project will be carried out in two stages. The first one, scheduled to be completed in 2019, involves the establishment of 37 stations. Msheireb station, located in the heart of Doha, will be the Metro network’s headquarters and the intersection point for three of its four lines (Red, Green and Gold) – covering 84km (underground, above ground and on the ground levels). In the future, al-Bishri explained, the Education City station will serve a dual purpose - linking the Green Line to the Long-Distance Passenger Rail in addition to its current trajectory.

The project’s second phase, extending 152km (underground, above ground and on the ground levels) and encompassing nearly 56 stations, will be delivered by 2026.

The next annual Doha International Book Fair will be held at a new venue, said Abdullah Al Ansari, Director of General Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

Next year, the fair will be held either at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) or at the new exhibition centre located beside City Centre Doha, Al Ansari, who was also the director of the book fair, told QNA yesterday. “This move will solve parking and other problems and boost the growing number of visitors,” he said. He claimed that around 500,000 people visited this year’s book fair, 25 percent of whom were students. The eleven-day fair witnessed more visitors on Thursdays and Fridays, he said.

Talking about lack of parking space for visitors, he said: “This was due to road and excavation works and was beyond the control of organisers of the expo,” adding they were taking into consideration all the feedback to improve the next edition of the fair.

The timing of this year’s fair was better because it did not coincide with examinations in Independent schools and with year-end celebrations in expatriate schools, he said.

He denied there was price hike at this year’s fair saying as with other commodities, prices of books are increasing every year. On their part, the booksellers had to cover expenses including cost of shipment, hotel accommodation and stall charges, he explained.

The schedule of the 25th edition of the fair will be from December 3 to 13, 2014 and Brazil will be the guest of honour, he revealed.

Like this year, the next edition of the fair is set to witness a wide range of international activities including a visit of a Nobel laureate in literature.

The Cultural Ministry, Al Ansari said, would coordinate with Brazil Embassy to host world-famous writer Paulo Coelho whose international bestseller The Alchemist was translated into more than 60 languages and sold 150m copies worldwide. With the UK as the guest of honour, this year’s fair saw 360 publishers from 29 Arab and non-Arab countries and 790 stalls. The focus of this year’s fair was on children’s literature, Qatari heritage and poetry.

Under the patronage of H.E the Minister of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP), Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ today unveiled one of the country’s most important infrastructure projects that will provide an iconic image for the city of Doha to the world. In the presence of honourable H.E the Minister, senior government dignitaries, Ashghal officials and media representatives Eng. Nasser Bin Ali Al-Mawlawi, President of Ashghal announced the Sharq Crossing project.

Doha’s Sharq Crossing will be one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken in the Middle East, comprising three iconic bridges interconnected by subsea tunnels spanning a ten kilometre stretch of water and linking Doha’s Hamad International Airport with the city’s cultural district of Katara in the north and the downtown central business district of West Bay. The 12 kilometre project is designed by world renowned architect, engineer and artist Santiago Calatrava and will become an icon for Qatar. The project is one of the most technologically advanced building and complex programmes being undertaken by Ashghal to enhance Qatar’s transportation network ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and to fulfil Qatar National Vision 2030.

“Sharq Crossing is an engineering masterpiece of design, and while providing an important new artery to Doha’s existing road network, it will be instantly recognisable across the world and will be an emblem for Qatar,” said Ashghal’s President H.E Eng. Nasser Bin Ali Al-Mawlawi.

“Ashghal, in collaboration with its partners, is confident that once complete, this technical and engineering marvel will be one of the most outstanding structures in the world.”

The project will boast three inter-connected Sharq Crossing bridges, between 600 and 1,310 metres in length and connect to eight kilometres of subsea tunnels. Calatrava’s design is inspired by natural forms, and draws from the image of flying fish to form iconic arcs which will provide a stunning addition to Doha’s skyline.
“Architecture for public works humanises the natural landscape and serves the community. The Sharq Crossing project for Doha is a great opportunity to develop an exceptional and grand piece of public work,” said Santiago Calatrava.

The Sharq Crossings comprises three interconnected bridges, named “West Bay”, “Cultural City”, and “Al Sharq”. The most intricately designed of the three bridges, West Bay, will be a two-deck arched structure incorporating a recreational park that can be accessed via an elevated walkway and a funicular cableway and will also include hospitality and recreation facilities that will make the most of the panoramic view of the city’s skyline. Passengers will be transported into the central business district along the top of the arch structure providing spectacular views of the city and the coastal environment around Doha. Implementing the most stringent international design standards, the Sharq Crossing bridges have been designed with a minimum number of supports to reduce long-term impact to the marine environment.

Sharq Crossing’s subsea connected tunnel links will provide an expressway of three lanes in each direction between Doha’s Hamad International Airport and West Bay; and two lanes in each direction between West Bay and Lusail. The crossing tunnels have been designed to meet strict international traffic management and safety requirements. To further enhance safety criteria, heavy goods vehicles will be excluded from accessing Sharq Crossing.

Health and safety has been carefully considered across all aspects of the crossing and specifically tunnel design, combining enhanced fire-resistant structures with ventilation, smoke exhaust and dedicated pressurized escape routes.
Ashghal has appointed Fluor Corporation as the programme management consultant for construction supervision of Sharq Crossing, which is estimated to commence by 2015. Stephen B. Dobbs, Group President, Industrial & Infrastructure at Fluor Corporation said: “As a company of builders, Fluor is proud to be associated with such an iconic project. It is clear Sharq Crossing will be a prominent feature in the world's image of Qatar as the country is showcased on the world stage.”

As the country gears up for National Day celebrations, a Qatar national flag measuring 101,000+sqm was yesterday recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest flag in the world, beating current record holder Romania, which created a 79,000sqm flag last year.
The flag, described as the “Flag of Gratitude and Loyalty”, is currently spread across a large area on the outskirts of the capital.
The announcement was made in the presence of a huge gathering of Qatari citizens at a glittering ceremony held at the Katara amphitheatre.
A Guinness World Records official flown in from the UK presented the certificate of recognition to a representative of the “Flag of Gratitude and Loyalty” team at the event.
Speaking about the flag, the Guinness World Records official said: “This is a big challenge and one of the most difficult records I have seen. The record grew many times from 1976 and the current record to break is almost 80,000sqm. It was established in Romania last year with a flag that set the record of 79,000sqm.”
He described the Qatari flag as “a very large engineering project involving a lot of challenges”, which must follow the Guinness World Records guidelines.
“More than 2,000 people have taken part in this project, which is supported by Brooq Qatari Magazine and Katara. Yesterday, I went to see the flag on location and was impressed by the quality of manufacturing, stitching, material and quality of fabric - all were of very high standards, as well as the participation of the people involved as nobody wanted to leave after the work was done. The flag means so much to them than just its size,” he pointed out before announcing the size of the flag.
The audience at the unveiling event were later serenaded by the Qatar Armed Forces orchestra.

Delayed Doha airport gets $6.8m giant teddy bear

Visitors passing through Doha’s Hamad International Airport will be treated to the sight of a $6.8m sculpture of a teddy bear when the facility finally opens for commercial flights at some point next year.

Arabian Business understands that the installation, which has been bought by a member of Qatar’s royal family, is already in place at the airport.

The Urs Fischer sculpture, which weighs 35,000 pounds and stands 23 feet tall, was previously displayed in front of the Seagram Building on New York’s Park Avenue. The teddy bear was auctioned off at Christie’s New York for just over $6.8m earlier this year.

The outlay comes despite the fact that there is still no certainty as to the opening date of the new airport, which was originally due to open three years ago.

The $15.5bn planned hub for Qatar Airways has missed a series of launch dates, including the end of 2012, April 1 this year and the end of this year.

The slow progress onsite has been hampered by a series of squabbles between Hamad International’s management and contractors over payment terms, one of which has resulted in a $250m claim against the airport.

In September, Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker claimed that the airport would now begin operating “early next year”.

Earlier this month, Qatar’s transport minister, Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, was quoted as saying that Hamad International could start passenger operations in January via a ‘soft launch’ of 10 airlines flying out of one concourse.
